Inspiration For The Basketball Spinner
As told by Dave “Deet Deet” Porter, Inventor:
As a young man just out of high school and working in a factory, I became interested in inventing things. I had several ideas that I made in to products.
All of these inventions took a lot of time to explain, and by not being a salesman, I did not like the idea of convincing or persuading store owners. I wanted a product that would sell itself.
So I prayed and asked for an idea. An idea that would not require a lot of explaining. When people saw it in action they would know what it is, what it does and eventually come to want one.
Several weeks later, on a Saturday morning, I was was watching cartoons with my four kids, Joe, Mary, Mike and Dan. An episode of “Scooby-Doo” came on featuring and introduction that had the cartoon characters of the “Harlem Globetrotters” dribbling and passing the basketballs around. Towards the end of the introduction one of the Globetrotters flipped the basketball up on one finger and it was still spinning.
At that instant it came to me! There was a flash and a burst, bubbling up in my conscious mind that said “invent a product that will teach, show and enable people to spin a basketball on one finger.” So right there and then I decided that I would provide a tool to anyone and everyone who always wanted to spin a basketball on their finger, but never knew how.
After the initial idea there was a lot of research, calling people, technical drawings, injection molding companies, bearing manufacturers, financing and many other challenges to face. But that’s another story for a another time. The important thing is that the one and only “Basketball Spinner” is complete and can show you how to finally spin a basketball on your finger!
Best of luck to you!
